The World Heritage Committee removed sites in Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, and the United States of America from the List of Sites in Danger.
In Bulgaria, water supply and damaging activites threatened the Sebarna Nature Reserve, a refuge for nearly 200 species of birds, many of them rare or endangered. Water supply from the Danube River and adoption of a new management plan have improved the situation.
In Serbia and Montenegro, many of the historic monuments and buildings of the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor were damaged by the 1979 earthquake. The most remarkable structures have now been restored using appropriate conservation techniques.
In the United States of America, several factors seriously affected Yellowstone National Park. Abandonment of adjacent mining operations and progress in handling issues such as the pressure of year-round visitors resulted in its removal from the List of Sites in Danger. The committee, however, urged the United States to continue to report on the park's snowmobile phase-out and other efforts to ensure that winter tourism respects protection of the park, its visitors and its wildlife.
