The World Heritage Committee inscribed 27 new World Heritage Sites during its annual meeting in July 2008. The number of sites now totals 878. Of the new sites, 19 are cultural and 8 are natural. In addition, extensions were added to four properties already on the list.
For the first time, a site in Saudi Arabia was designated a World Heritage Site. Formerly known as Hegra, The Archaeological Site of Al-Hijr (Madâin Sâlih) is the largest conserved site of the civilization of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. It features well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD.
