After a 19–year absence, the United States rejoined UNESCO on October 1, 2003. Early this year, the United States Congress approved the $71 million requested by President George W. Bush for re-entry into UNESCO.
The funds fulfill President Bush's commitment announced before the United Nations General Assembly on September 12, 2002 that: "As a symbol of our commitment to human dignity, the United States will return to UNESCO. The organization has been reformed, and America will participate fully in its mission to advance human rights and tolerance and learning."
